  • The Hanging Swamp & Heath: Weaving through the rare, perched wetlands and coastal scrub that offer a sanctuary for local birdlife and quiet reflection.

  • A Morning Tea Pause: Finding a moment of stillness at the very edge of the headland to look out over the Pacific with a refreshing morning tea.

🫶 Why You’ll Love This Hike

We begin our morning at the calm waters of Little Manly Cove, easing into our movement as we make our way toward the famous stretch of Manly Beach. From here, we hug the coastline to Shelly Beach, where the path turns upward into the wilder side of the headland. The climb is "steppy" but rewarding, quickly elevating us into a landscape of wind-swept heath and dramatic clifftops. We’ll follow the secret-feeling Blue Fish Track, passing remnants of WWII surveillance posts and old stone walls that hold a century of stories. The day is a beautiful rhythm of "big views" at the Fairfax lookouts and a walk through the storied grounds of the North Head Sanctuary, where the military history of the site adds a layer of grounded, quiet strength to our journey. We’ll wrap up our loop with a gentle descent back toward the cove, feeling grounded by the salt air, the weight of history, and the steady pace of shared conversation.

🥾 Activity Level & Track Grade

Beginner to Intermediate:

A rugged clifftop adventure following natural bush tracks and military relics, with a rewarding ascent from the beach to the headland. Grade 2-3 (Easy to Moderate):

  • The Climb: This walk features well-maintained bush tracks, some paved sections, and a rewarding "steppy" section as we ascend from Shelly Beach up toward the headland.

  • Elevation: Expect some heart-pumping stairs and steady inclines as we transition from the shoreline to the high cliffs of North Head.

  • Terrain: A mix of defined paths, historic stone steps and some slightly uneven or rocky sections near the old military sites.

  • Fitness: Requires a baseline level of fitness for the uphill stretches, but we will be taking it at a soulful, steady pace with plenty of pauses for photos.
